The Eastern Massasauga Rattlesnake (Sistrurus catenatus catenatus) is the only snake in Ontario with slit-like vertical pupils and a diamond shaped head (when viewed from above), although its venom is poisonous it is timid and usually only bites when provoked, this one on the rocky shore of the French River did not even feel threatened enough to rattle when we walked past it originally unnoticed or when photographing it with a large lens from a safe distance
